December Home Maintenance

clean and inspect fireplace

12 things you can do to keep your home in top shape during December

1) Clean & replace furnace filter.  Call for service if needed.

2) Dust ceiling fan blades for use will balance heat on cold days.

3) Don't damage your sidewalk by applying salt de-icers - use sparingly!

4) Self-clean the oven on a cold day.

5) Replace fire extinguishers, and batteries in smoke and Co2 detectors.

6) Clean & disinfect faucet aerators and clean inside shower heads.

7) Inspect fireplace for proper operation.

8) Reseal grout and caulk on tubs, toilets, counters, and floors.

9) Test Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) outlets.

10) Sprinkle baking soda in disposal.  Grind-up a few cut lemons.

11) Keep sidewalks clear.  Don't let ice build-up.  Request a volunteer to shovel if you're back isn't up to the task.

12) Drain a few gallons from the hot water heater.  Lower the temperature and save near 5% for every 10 degree adjustment.

Bonus Tip:   Turn your mattress every 30 days if a king, and every 2 months otherwise.  Just leave the fitted sheet in place and turn it.
