After nine consecutive weeks of rising interest rates and weak mortgage bonds, the bond market rebounded late last week on falling stock prices. This helped mortgage rates to stabilize as we enter the new year.

Despite the rise of mortgage rates since the presidential election, the 30-year conventional rate is currently holding around the 4.25% mark, with the 15-year near 3.5%. These low rates still represent some of the best rates we've seen, going all the way back to the early 1970s. See more rates, below.

With the new congress off to a rocky start, we're likely to see lots of volatility in the stock market during the first few months of the new year. That may spell good news for stable or falling mortgage rates.
