August Gardening Tips - Colorado

Keep your yard and garden in top shape with these timely and seasonal gardening tips.

  • Remember to water in the early morning so plants can absorb water before the soil dries.
  • Start to plant late-season annuals for fall color (mums, flowering cabbage, kale).  Cut-back overgrown annuals and perennials.
  • Prune or shear flowering trees-shrubs when flowering has faded.
  • Protect and mark your location of bulbs and perennials once they go dormant.
  • Routinely check for insects and pests, and remove spent plants that provide a shelter for insects, and disease.
  • Roses require heaving feeding.  Fertilize and prune to encourage fall growth and winterizing.

  • Keep the compost pile moist and aerated.  This will hasten decomposition.
  • Prepare lawn for re-seeding. Treat bare spots generously.
  • Plan ahead for fall bulb plantings.  Order bulbs now.
