For Your Derby-Day Get Together

Here's some ideas that'll make your Kentucky Derby party a hit.  Depending on how much time you have to prepare, try some of these suggestions with your guest: 

► Order souvenir derby glasses at the official Kentucky Derby website.  If you really want to impress, serve your mint juleps in official pewter or silver cups. 

► Get invitations out weeks ahead.  In some years the derby falls on mothers day weekend, so turn-out may not be as high as hoped.  Check the calendar before sending out all those invites. 

► Organize the food.  Ask everone attending to bring a dish or dessert.  Make it more interesting by having guests bring dishes from a "southern-style" or kentucky fare.

► Have a dress-up contest.  Ask the ladies and gents to bring (or make) their own derby-day garb and hats.  You can buy a hat at a few places, below.

► Post an early start time at least 2-3 hours ahead of Post Time.

► Days before the big race, create race programs for all the horses, their numbers, and handicaps.  See official KentuckyDerby online.

► Pick-up the mixings for your Mint Juleps and Long-Island Iced Teas.  Try this mint julep recipe.

► Get the BBQ grill cleaned up, and pick-up a fresh tank of propane.

► Dust-off the (or get) big screen HDTV.

► Plan a few outdoor games.  Dig out the croquet set, horseshoes, badminton, & mow the lawn.

► Prepare tickets with each horse's number for the pool or drawing.  Place your own wagers.

► Serve old fashioned ice cream and make rootbeer floats for the kids.

► Arrange designated drivers for those who imbibe in too many Mint Juleps.

► Relax and enjoy your guests and the big race!
