13 things you can do to keep your home in top shape during January

1) Inspect fireplace damper for sealing and operation.  

2) Inspect gas-log pilot light.  Flame should burn blue with yellow tips.

3) Remove ice build-up from gutters, downspouts, eaves, and roof.  Watch this video about how to prevent costly ice-dams from forming.

4) Keep fresh snow off of decks & railings to preserve wood.

5) Check attic screens for squirrel damage.  Re-mesh all vents.

6) Examine dishwasher connections for leaks.

7) Run the self-clean cycle on stove/oven on a cold winters day.

8) Clean grease traps in range-hood ducts.

9) Inspect under sinks for drips & leaks, and toilets secure.

10) Sharpen garbage disposal by grinding several cups of ice cubes.

11) Inspect and vacuum floor registers to clear any debris & blockage.

12) Replace furnace filter.

13) Clear snow from the concrete gutters along sidewalk.  Helps prevent slip-and-falls on your walks.
