Although Dad takes the brunt of lots of light-hearted jokes on TV and is often depicted as a buffoon, he's your smart, caring, loving, handy - father or husband. 

This Fathers Day, make dad feel appreciated.  You don't need to plan anything extravagant.  Just keeping it simple will make him happy and feeling special.



Here are over 30 places to take dad, or things to do, on Fathers Day - many without spending much at all:

  1.   2. Go to the marina at Chatfield or Cherry Creek.  Rent a canoe.  Kids swim & have a picnic on the beach.
  3. Head to the museum for the latest Imax screening & planetarium show.
  4. Serve dad breakfast in bed.  Don't go overboard.  Just grab some cheap eats to make it all worthwhile and fun.
  5. Colorado Springs day tour: Do the Pikes Peak Cog Railway and have lunch at Guisseppi’s and watch the trains pass by.
  6. Have your own family day at Waterworld or Island Kingdom Water Park at Elitches.
  7. Head to Glenwood Springs for at day at the hot springs pool (a personal favorite).
  8. Bike or walk any of Denver's great bike trails.  Good ones are the Highline Canal Trail, Waterton Canyon, or Cherry Creek.
  9. Take the family to one of several local Farmers Markets.
  10. See the Fathers Day Family Comedy Show at the Comedy Works.
  11. Take dad to the Colorado Railroad Museum.  
  12. Lots of places have free specials for the day, so keep your eyes peeled for the announcements on local TV station websites. 
  13. Have lunch at Centennial airport's The Perfect Landing, and watch the planes takeoff.
  14. Take a day hike at Mount Falcon Park or Castlewood Canyon State Park.
  15. Take dad to the Family Shooting Center at Cherry Creek for an afternoon of target shooting.  They'll supply the firearms, safety glasses, and everything.  Call ahead.
  16. Take in an afternoon baseball game at either the Rockies or Sky Sox.  Sit in the rockpile and bring a picnic lunch and sodas for cheap fun.
  17. See the new animals and exhibits at either the Denver Zoo or Cheyenne Mtn Zoo.
  18. Go watch the model airplanes fly, spin, and land at Chatfield's State Park's model air strip.  
  19. Go throw some ripe tomatoes in the face of the insult-laden town jerk, at the Colorado Renaissance Festival.
  20. See a movie matinee of your favorite summer movie release.

  22. Knock off a few rounds of bowling with the family.
  23. Ride go-karts all day at Boondocks.  One price pays for a full day of fun.
  24. Get root beer floats for everyone at A&W, or enjoy a royal treat at DQ.
  25. Shoot some Estes Model Rockets off at the park.  Check for fire restrictions beforehand.
  26. Lakeside Amusement Park usually has a Fathers Day specials.  Go enjoy some nostalgic fun in the House Of Glass, ride the Wild Chipmunk, Old Fashioned Cyclone Coaster, Bumper Cars, Scrambler, Skoota Boats, and more.
  27. Get the whole family to play a few games of basketball in your driveway, or croquet in the backyard.  Stoke up the grill and BBQ for dad.
  28. Spend a day at the local rec center with the family. Swim, play ping-pong, pool, and any special events for dad's day.
  29. Try out a round of Adventure Golf. It's the best mini-golf course in Colorado.  Best time to go is during the evening when all the lights are on.  
  30. Hit 9 holes on the par 3 at South Suburban.  Great for kids and families, and very reasonable, too.
  31. BBQ in your own backyard.  Cook for dad this time around.  Play some board games afterwards.
  32. Check out the Denver Firefighters Museum.  Enjoy all the old relics and do lunch afterwards.
  33. Go to a drive-in movie.  Be there early and bring a football to toss around before the show starts at dusk.  Bring some money for a few treats at the concession stand.  Check out the Denver's newest drive-in at The Merchandise Mart!
  34. Have a family day and stay at home.  Run in sprinklers, give the dog a bath, dust off the 'slip in slide', have a water balloon fight.
