August Home Maintenance

front porch

10 things you can do to keep your home in
top-shape during August

  • Paint the house while the weather is nice.  Save paint - don't apply in directly sunlight.  Best quality paints last much longer - check Consumer Reports!
  • Replace fence boards and landscape borders that have deteriorated or rotted.
  • Pull and replace loose nails in deck boards with deck screws. Wash and re-stain deck.
  • Inspect window rods and sashes.  Lubricate metal window parts.  I have a referral for old and hard-to-find windows parts.
  • Clean refrigerator coils at rear of fridge.
  • Fill floor drains and traps with water.  Mineral oil is a better alternative, because it doesn't evaporate so quickly.
  • Test carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.  Replace batteries.
  • Clean air conditioning and furnace filters, replace.
  • Service kitchen sink disposer by grinding several cups of ice cubes and lemon peels.
  • Scour and wash drip pans and trim rings.  Here's another way to easy-clean them using WD-40.

AVOID THE HASSLES AND EXPENSE
THAT DEFERRED MAINTENANCE CAN CAUSE
