Highlands Ranch remained undeveloped cattle ranching land until the late 1970s. In just a few decades though, Highlands Ranch has transformed itself into a 22,000-acre master-planned community that is recognized nationally as one of the most desirable places to live in the country.
The Ranch is situated 12 miles south of Denver near Interstate I-25 and C-470. The Mission Viejo Company originally envisioned and prepared the master plan for the community, which today includes 4 impressive and unique recreation centers, a myriad of parks, 70 miles of paved or natural trails connecting its parks and neighborhoods, five high schools, shopping districts, and a town center. The architect of Highlands Ranch also provided for the preservation of huge parcels of land (61%) throughout the community to remain as designated open space and for recreation.
The Highlands Ranch Community Association currently operates and maintains four state-of-the-art and first-class recreation facilities throughout the community. The recreation centers offer residents an unparalleled variety of fitness and leisure activities, recreation and educational programs, and sports leagues. It has one of the most comprehensive community amenity programs to be found in the region, bar none.
